NYU Shanghai Library houses a collection of more than 27,000 books and 1,600 DVDs that support the teaching, learning, and scholarship of the university. Our students, faculty, and staff also have access to over 1.5 million electronic books and more than 1 thousand electronic databases.
If the materials are not available in NYU Shanghai Library, we will source them beyond our own collection.
Borrow, Renew & Return
Borrow
Circulating materials can be checked out at the Circulation desk or the self-checkout machines. A current NYU ID card needs to be presented in order to borrow or renew books.
Renewal
- Borrowers in good standing may renew eligible items by their due dates in person at the circulation desk or by logging into your library account.
- Items recalled or requested by another user or that have been declared lost will not be eligible for renewal.
- If you need to extend a loan for an Interlibrary loan item, please notify us at shanghai.circulation@nyu.edu at least five days before the due date. Renewals are decided by the lending library. We will notify you by email if a renewal can be granted.
Return
In-person
Library items may be returned to the NYU Shanghai Library at:
- 5th floor, circulation desk in the library during service hours
- 5th floor, book return drop in the front of the circulation desk (24/7)
- 5th floor, Northwest corner, external book return box (24/7)
*It is suggested that course reserve, media, library equipment, and interlibrary loan items be returned to the circulation desk in person to expedite returns and avoid any overdue fines.
By mail
We strongly suggest that packages be sent insured, via a service that provides tracking, as you are responsible for any items lost or damaged during shipping.
Items are not considered "returned" (and continue to accumulate fines) until they are actually received and processed by library staff. Please see our return instructions and mail address.

- As a courtesy, the Library will routinely send email notices to borrowers about recalled items, due dates, overdue items, fines, and lost items.
- Borrowers are responsible for keeping track of due dates and returning and renewing Library materials on or before the due date.
- Items that are excessively overdue will be considered lost and the borrower will be billed for replacement automatically. If the item is subsequently returned you will be responsible only for any late fine.
- Replacement cost for lost or damaged materials varies and will be assessed by the library on a case-by-case basis. The charge for a lost interlibrary loan item is determined by the lending library.
- To make a payment, please follow the instructions.
Self Checkout
Eligible borrowers can check out materials 24 hours a day and avoid lines at the Circulation desks by using the Self-check machines.
